Laser hair removal in autumn: the best time to start

Laser hair removal in autumn: the best time to start
Every October the same scene repeats: we put away our flip-flops, take out our long trousers and postpone “until next year” the laser hair removal we have been thinking about for so long. That is exactly the opposite of what we should do. Autumn is, by far, the best time to start laser hair removal treatment, and this is not a marketing claim: it is pure photobiology.
Why autumn is the ideal moment
The laser targets the melanin in the hair: it absorbs the energy of the pulse, converts it into heat and destroys the follicle without damaging the surrounding skin. But melanin cannot tell the difference between the hair you want to remove and the melanin in skin that is freshly tanned from the August sun. Tanned skin competes with the hair for the laser energy, reduces the effectiveness of each session and increases the risk of burns and hyperpigmentation.
- No active tan: in autumn your skin returns to its base tone, the contrast between hair and skin is at its maximum and every session delivers more.
- A full cycle fits into winter: treatment requires 6 to 8 sessions spaced 4–8 weeks apart. If you start in October, you reach summer with most of the work already done.
- Less sun exposure after each session: after laser you should avoid direct sun on the treated area for a few days, and between October and May that happens naturally.
How diode laser works, session by session
At SanySa del Levante we work with a diode laser, the reference technology for definitive hair removal on Caucasian and Mediterranean skin, with a cooled tip that protects the epidermis and makes the pulse much more comfortable. At each session: shaving the area the same day (never wax or tweezers beforehand), eye protection for patient and operator, systematic passes of the handpiece and a previous power test according to your skin type and area. The sensation is that of a warm elastic flick with constant cooling.
Myths worth debunking
- “Laser is permanent after one session”: false. Hair is removed during its active growth phase and, since not all follicles are synchronized, several sessions are needed to cover complete cycles.
- “It works the same on every hair and skin”: it works best on dark hair over fair skin; blonde, grey or very reddish hair contains little melanin and responds poorly.
- “I can keep doing it while pregnant”: as a precaution, laser is not performed during pregnancy. Always consult first.
- “It is the same as IPL at beauty salons”: no. A medical diode laser concentrates more energy and its use in a clinic is supervised by healthcare professionals.
Frequently asked questions before starting
- Does it hurt? You feel a brief hot pinch; the integrated cooling system in the handpiece greatly reduces discomfort. Underarms and bikini area are more sensitive than legs.
- How long does each session take? Between 10 minutes (underarms or bikini) and 45–60 minutes (full legs or back), depending on the area.
- Any aftercare? Moisturising, lukewarm water that day, and avoiding direct sun and tanning sessions for 2–3 weeks. You can exercise normally the next day.
- Can it be combined with other treatments? Yes, but always after prior assessment: at SanySa we coordinate laser with your aesthetic medicine or physiotherapy treatments if you are already being followed up.
Start now, show it off in summer
Laser hair removal is an investment in time and comfort: it does not need repeating every month, it avoids irritation, ingrown hairs and wax burns, and its total cost is lower than years of waxing or shaving. At SanySa del Levante we perform it with a state-of-the-art diode laser, in a clinic setting, with a free prior assessment and per-area or full-body plans. This autumn is the moment; summer will thank you.
