Intimate health in autumn: mistakes you should avoid (according to a gynecologist)

The change of season doesn’t only affect our mood or our skin. Autumn, with its colder and more humid climate, also generates changes in the intimate feminine area that we often overlook. Tighter clothing, reduced natural ventilation, altered pH… And most worryingly: many women believe that “feeling fine” is synonymous with being healthy.

As a gynecologist, I frequently see how this perception leads to silent, and sometimes costly, neglect. That’s why in this article I share the most common mistakes you should avoid in your intimate health during autumn, with real, preventive tips based on medical practice.

The most common intimate health mistakes

When the cold arrives, many of us opt for thermal leggings, tight jeans, or pantyhose all day. The problem is that this type of clothing limits the natural ventilation of the intimate area, creating a warm and humid environment ideal for fungi and bacteria.

Tip: Alternate with cotton underwear and avoid synthetic fabrics. When you’re at home, take the opportunity to wear looser garments.
This is one of the most dangerous mistakes I observe as a gynecologist. Many patients postpone their annual check-up because “they don’t feel anything strange.” But intimate health doesn’t always show clear signs. Mild infections, vaginal dysbiosis, or polyps can go completely unnoticed for months.

Professional advice: Get your annual gynecological check-up even if you have no symptoms. Prevention is more effective than treatment.
Cold weather shouldn’t change your intimate hygiene habits, but many women tend to use harsh soaps, vaginal douches, or perfumed products that alter the natural balance of vaginal flora.

Recommendation: Wash the vulvar area (not vaginal) once a day with water and a specific intimate hygiene soap, with neutral or acidic pH.

The connection between emotions and intimate health

Autumn is a season when many patients report mild discomfort, but they normalize it (“it’s the weather,” “it must be the new pants,” etc.). However, changes in discharge, persistent itching, or redness can be first signs of imbalance.

Act in time: If you notice any change, even mild, see your doctor. An early diagnosis prevents major complications.
Intimate health is also emotional. In autumn, many people experience mood dips, stress, or lack of sexual desire, which also affects hormonal balance and vaginal microbiota.

Take care of your mind: Adequate rest, hydration, gentle exercise, and maintaining healthy affective relationships also strengthen your intimate health.
Autumn is a time for introspection. Just as we check our skin, our hair, or our emotions, it’s vital to also check our gynecological health. Remember that the absence of symptoms doesn’t mean everything is fine. And your intimate area deserves the same level of care as any other part of your body.

Three key habits to prevent complications

As a gynecologist, I can affirm that most intimate complications could be avoided with three key habits:

  • Annual gynecological check-up (even without symptoms).
  • Balanced hygiene without excess.
  • Active listening to your body.

Autumn is the perfect time to stop and ask yourself: am I really taking care of my intimate health as I should?
